Wood stove connected to cast iron radiator

Hi,
I would like to connect a wood stove to a cast iron radiator. Sounds like I need an open water heating setup. Does a system like this need to be connected to mains water? Most of the line drawings I'm seeing show the system connected to a water tank. I don't need a water tank, do I need to connect one? I currently have a closed loop hydronic setup but would like to set this up independently of that system.
