How to go about repairing/covering this ceiling

Hi all

Moved into a new house recently and removed a sort of media wall. I've been left with this mess of a ceiling,

What's the best way to go about repairing? I'd need to cover this wide hole before even attempting to skim over but I'm not sure the best way to go about that?

I've done small plaster repairs before but nothing with holes this big, any general advice on best way forward would be much appreciated
