Block on Flat Retaining Wall - External Render Problem

Hi all
I few years ago I went halves with the neighbour to sort out a retaining wall that was in a bad shape....Its sorted structurally but the render is in a bit of a state. Mainly because there is earth up against the wall. The render while not comming away or anything is just green, paint peels off and it just looks a bit of a state etc. So as its us that facing the wall I was thinking of getting some of that split faced tile .......all down the length of wall to hopefully sort it out...
